When searching for a healthy and beneficial dog treat, you may consider human food and question whether it is safe for your pet. It is essential to investigate whether human food suits dogs, as not all options suit them.
Using frozen cooked carrots for dogs is a safe choice and advantageous. Carrots are low calorie, low fat, high in fiber, and can help clean their teeth by scraping and removing plaque buildup. They are also high in Vitamin A (eye health, healthy skin and coat, and immune health). Vitamin A is an essential nutrient and can be in commercially produced dog food. It is fat-soluble and can build up in the body and become toxic. Serve carrots as a treat. Make sure to slightly steam or boil them. Dogs cannot metabolize the nutrients of raw carrots and will not reap all the benefits if eaten raw.
Carrots may cause some gas and intestinal upset if they are eaten raw. Start slow and use these as an occasional treat. Always offer clean, fresh water.
RECIPE for a giant carrot chew toy
INGREDIENTS:
Organic carrots (I choose organic, so there are no pesticides)
Dog Bone Broth
Clean, pure, filtered water
INSTRUCTIONS:
Clean, peel, and cut the ends of the carrots
Poke holes in each carrot with a fork
Add DOG bone broth (not human grade) with equal parts filtered clean water to a stovetop pot
Add the carrots and bring to a boil
Remove when fork tender (about 10-15 minutes). Smaller carrots may not take as long.
Let them cool
Store in the freezer
Keep the bone broth/water mixture to make brothsicles. To create more treats, pour the broth into ice cube trays and freeze it, or use it as a topping for food.
